Sunday after Holy Pentecost
Tone:

+ In the
Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit +
“O glorious Apostles of Christ, You were
called by God to be Teachers of the world. You found the Lord and bound
yourselves to Him as God’s mediator to all. Intercede with Him that He may
grant mercy and peace to our souls. Amen.”
+ The
Epistle +
Verse: “Let Thy Mercy, O
Lord, be upon us.
Rejoice
in the Lord, O ye Righteous”.
The Reading is from
the Letter of St. Paul the Apostle to the Romans.
(Chapter 2:10 -16)
Brethren, glory and honor and peace to
everyone who works what is good, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. For
there is no partiality with God. For as many as have sinned without law will
also perish without law, and as many as have sinned in the law will be judged
by the law (for not the hearers of the law are just in the sight of God, but
the doers of the law will be justified; for when Gentiles, who do not have the
law, by nature do the things in the law, these, although not having the law,
are a law to themselves, who show the work of the law written in their hearts,
their conscience also bearing witness, and between themselves their thoughts
accusing or else excusing them) in the day when, according to my gospel, God
will judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ.
+ The
Holy Gospel +
(Chapter 4:18-23)
At that time, as Jesus was walking by the Sea
of Galilee, He saw two brothers, Simon who is called Peter and Andrew his
brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen. And He said to
them, "Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men." Immediately they
left their nets and followed Him. And going on from there He saw two other
brothers, James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, in the boat with
Zebedee their father, mending their nets, and He called them. Immediately they
left the boat and their father, and followed Him. And He went about all
Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and preaching the Gospel of the kingdom and
healing every disease and every infirmity among the people.
Meditation:
“Follow Me”
When Jesus chose the Apostles, He issued a
“call” to them. In the Gospel of St. Matthew (4:18-23); we have a record of the
call of two sets of brothers: Peter and Andrew; and John and James—all
fishermen. Jesus said to them: “Follow me!” And they left their nets and
followed Him. Their decision to take up the challenge was the beginning of a
tremendous story which they wrote through their ministries by the power of the
Holy Spirit. Jesus had a mission to accomplish and as a man could not do it
alone. He needed helpers and went out and found them. He called them in
everyday circumstances. God often chooses ordinary people in ordinary
conditions. When they respond with their whole heart, He makes them
extraordinary by His grace, in order to accomplish His purposes. What a life
the Apostles had as God’s conscripts! How many souls they won for the Kingdom!
They truly became “fishers of men and women” by the grace of God. Simon, for
example, became Peter (the “Rock”), the Apostle and the founding Patriarch of
Antioch being the first Bishop and Patron Saint of our Church, an important
missionary leader. And later the Patron of the Church of Rome. St. Andrew, who
also was a great missionary, became the Patron of the Church of Constantinople
according to tradition. St. John was the beloved disciple, the mystical singer
of divine love, whose spiritual legacy included the Fourth Gospel and Epistles
bearing his name. He was the Patron of the Church of Ephesus and became known
as the “Theologian” to later generations.

Today - Sunday, June 25th:
St. Fevronia the Righteous Martyr
Apolytikon
(Tone 4): O Lord Jesus, unto
Thee Thy lamb doth cry with a great voice: O my Bridegroom, Thee I love; and
seeking Thee, I now contest, and with Thy baptism am crucified and buried. I
suffer for Thy sake, that I may reign with Thee; for Thy sake I die, that I may
live in Thee: accept me offered out of longing to Thee as a spotless sacrifice.
O Lord, save our souls through her intercessions, since Thou art great in
mercy.
Kontakion
(Tone 3): In ascetic
discipline, thou was made fair as a virgin; then, O famed Fevronia, thou shone
forth as a martyr; with thy lamp in hand, thou ran unto thy Bridegroom, having
watched through the night of martyric sufferings. And since thou art crowned in
glory, thou intercedes for them that praise thee with faith.
Synaxarion: This Martyr practiced the ascetic discipline in Nisibis of
Mesopotamia; she was of such great beauty that the report of her came to the
persecutor Selenus, and every attempt was made to make her deny Christ. After
many horrible tortures, she was cruelly dismembered by the executioners, then
beheaded, in the year 310 (or, according to some, in 302, during the reign of
Diocletian).
