26th Sunday after Pentecost and Leave-taking of the Presentation of the Theotokos and St. Catherine the Great Martyr

Tone: 1                                                +                                       Eothinion: 4

+ In the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit +

Our Heavenly Father, Thou hast gladdened our hearts with all the things Thou hast created for us. We thank Thee for all Thy rich blessings, and especially for sending forth to us Heavenly Bread, food for the whole world, our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, Who became poor so that we might become rich. We also thank Thee for the gift of Thy Holy Spirit. Thou art the source of all sustenance and Thy Name is glorified, of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, always, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen”

+ The Epistle +

Verse: God is wondrous in His saints. Bless God in the congregations.

The Reading is from the Epistle of St. Paul to the Galatians.

Chapter (3:23-4:5)

Brethren, before faith came, we were confined under the Law, kept under restraint until faith should be revealed.  So that the Law was our custodian until Christ came, that we might be justified by faith.  But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a custodian; for in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God, through faith.  For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ.  There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.  And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s offspring, heirs according to promise.  I mean that the heir, as long as he is a child, is no better than a slave, though he is the owner of all the estate; but he is under guardians and trustees until the date set by the father.  So with us; when we were children, we were slaves to the elemental spirits of the universe.  But when the time had fully come, God sent forth His Son, to redeem those who were under the Law, so that we might receive adoption as sons.

+ The Holy Gospel +

The Reading is from the Holy Gospel according to St. Luke

(Chapter 18:18-27)

At that time, a certain man asked Jesus, saying, “Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” So Jesus said to him, “Why do you call Me good? No one is good but One, that is, God. You know the commandments: ‘Do not commit adultery,’ ‘Do not murder,’ ‘Do not steal,’ ‘Do not bear false witness,’ ‘Honor your father and your mother.’” And he said, “All these things I have kept from my youth.” So when Jesus heard these things, He said to him, “You still lack one thing. Sell all that you have and distribute to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.” But when he heard this, he became very sorrowful, for he was very rich. And when Jesus saw that he became very sorrowful, He said, “How hard it is for those who have riches to enter the kingdom of God! For it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.” And those who heard it said, “Who then can be saved?” But He said, “The things which are impossible with men are possible with God.”

Resurrection… (2)

On Death and Resurrection in Christ

Yesterday I was crucified with Him; today I am glorified with Him.

Yesterday I died with Him; today I am made alive with Him.

Yesterday I was buried with Him; today I am raised up with Him.

Let us offer to Him Who suffered and rose again for us ... ourselves, the possession most precious to God and most proper.

Let us become like Christ, since Christ became like us.

Let us become Divine for His sake, since for us He became Man.

He assumed the worse that He might give us the better. He became poor that by His poverty we might become rich. He accepted the form of a servant that we might win back our freedom.

He came down that we might be lifted up. He was tempted that through Him we might conquer. He was dishonored that He might glorify us. He died that He might save us. He ascended that He might draw to Himself us, who were thrown down through the fall of sin. Let us give all, offer all, to Him who gave Himself a Ransom and Reconciliation for us.

We needed an incarnate God, a God put to death, that we might live. We were put to death together with Him that we might be cleansed. We rose again with Him because we were put to death with Him. We were glorified with Him because we rose again with Him. A few drops of Blood recreate the whole of creation!

What is the Incarnation of the Son of God  to us?

In the history of mankind, there is no event greater and more joyful than the incarnation and coming of the Son of God into the world. It is an act of the endless love of God the Father, Who so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

The incarnation of the Son of God from the Virgin Mary changed the world for the better in a radical way. It should change us as members of the church in a better way too, giving us a new way of thinking, ennobling our morals and directing the events of our life along a new course. It should bring us power to struggle against sin, reconciling us to God, who have been brought the adoption by the Father, who regenerated our whole nature. The Incarnation poured a stream of divine life into the corrupted human organism and thereby brought eternal life to men. For these reasons, the incarnation of the Son of God proved to be at the very center of our life, and is reckoned relative to it. The celebration of the Nativity of Christ became the most joyous festival for us; believers.

We should celebrate this feast by being wise, understanding what the will of the Lord is, being filled with the Holy Spirit, speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in our hearts to the Lord, giving thanks always for all things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, submitting to one another in the fear of God. Amen.
